NA Regional Qualifiers Week 5 - Recap

by HiRez ESports | Jun 02, 2014
We are now halfway through with the Regional Qualifiers with 5 weeks on our belt. That leaves us with 5 more weeks to see what are the top 4 teams in each region. These teams will have the opportunity to show off their skills in a live environment where ping is not a factor and a crowd is there cheering them on. But before we get there, we should go over this past weekends tournament in North America.

Team Dignitas            Five Angry Men            COGnitive Gaming
            1st                            2nd                               3rd

The first hot topic of the Week 5 NA Regional Qualifiers would have to be the incredible performance of the Five Angry Men. This team, composed of 3 players from the former "Denial eSports", started off the day as the 6th seed and had to go against the big, veteran teams such as the #3 seed SNIPE and even the #2 seed COGnitive Gaming. At both meetings, the Five Angry Men were able to achieve victory on both occasions and make it to the Grand Finals against Team Dignitas. This was the first time we saw anyone outside of the top 3 seeds defeat COGnitive Gaming in the year of 2014. Unfortunately for the Five Angry Men, they were unable to take a game off of Team Dignitas which left them with 60 points more than with what they started with.

The other big topic to look back on would have to be the fall of The Game Changers in the consolation match-up. Throughout all of the Regional Qualifiers, they've shown to be a strong team, but just can't seem to make it out of the #4 spot very often. In the 3rd place match-up, COGnitive Gaming came in with such a strong performance again Te Game Changers and forced a surrender from them 14 minutes in. If we recall correctly, this is the first surrender we saw in the semi-finals or later of the tournament. Between Andinster's jungling abilities and MLCst3ath's Zhong Kui, TGC just didn't think it was worth their time to proceed further into the game.

All of these upsets and crazy turnouts really make the entire qualifier series that much more exciting to watch and follow.
