EU Regional Qualifiers Week 4 - Recap

by HiRez ESports | May 26, 2014
Though there weren't as many teams who signed up for the EU qualifiers this past weekend, we had an amazing event. There were a lot of close matches between top teams and upcoming teams. And of course, if you caught any word of the tournament, you may have heard a thing or two about the new team - Worth Gaming.

But before we talk about Worth, there are a couple of teams that deserve some recognition from this past weekend. Let's start with Elo Fishers. They went up against Exposed Secrets (composed of a roster of veteran players from top teams) in the Round of 16 and walked away with a victory. Elo Fishes then went up against Cloud 9 HyperX, at which they lost, but it was a valiant effort on their behalf. Players such as GetFisher, FleuryQ and Resterian are well known names in the community that we see bringing this team up further into the overall standings.

Agilitas is another team that we see becoming a top team in the European scene. Each week we seem them make as far as the Quarter finals, but cant seem to make it past that point. With their consistent showing in the regional qualifiers, we don't think anyone should be surprised if we see this team peak their heads into the Top 4 from time to time. Their roster - Zindurn, Kobrokai, Hyperion, Murrdurr and PrettyPrime is very strong and as they have more room for improvement, we expect to see only good things out of this team. What do you think?

Okay, now lets get into the current top teams in the European scene - Cloud 9 HyperX, Team SoloMid and yes - Worth Gaming. Starting in the Semi-finals, Cloud 9 HyperX went up against the 3rd seed in Week 4. Cloud 9 went through this game in ease it seems like to get them into the Grand Finals. Team SoloMid, on the other hand, had a difficult time to make it into the finals again. The upcoming team, Worth Gaming, gave TSM a run for  their money as they won and advanced into the Grand Finals for a 2nd week in a row.

This resulted in a Best of 3 series with Cloud 9 vs Worth Gaming. Fast forwarding through the games, Worth took game 1  and Cloud 9, using Anubis in the solo lane (lol what?), they took game 2. So it came down to the 3rd and final game of the day. Was it going to be Cloud 9 to allow for them to make a large lead in 1st place for points? Or was it Worth Gaming's day for them to shine. Welp, getting straight to it, Worth Gaming was able to take down Cloud 9 and become the first unsponsored team in any qualifying tournament to take 1st place. The hype was real on Twitter, Reddit and Twitch chat. Though there are many Cloud 9 fans out there, everyone could respect the fact that a new team has come from the bottom and rise to the top in just 4 weeks.

Next week will really tell if Worth Gaming is as good as they seem to be. Being able to maintain this momentum is probably the most difficult position for any team to be in for the qualifying weeklies. Be sure to watch the action this Sunday at 9:00am EDT/1500 CEST on and show your support!
